Q and A with the artist

Q: How did you come up with the idea for "Photomosaics"?

I have been inspired by creative expression since I was a child and invested in pursuits of artistic education through college. In 1993 as I was working toward a masters degree, I felt I was still missing something in my life. During a three-day drive through the Rocky Mountains, I was captivated by the natural beauty around me and had an insatiable need to photograph the gorgeous mountains. When I returned home and printed the pictures, one detailed photo stood out. The naturally bright reds and greens in the alternating layers of rock was breathtaking. I framed and proudly hung it on my wall, yet every time I walked by it, I had a restless, unsettling feeling. How could I make this image express my memory of its beauty even more? I wanted MORE of it. For months, I struggled with this. Something about it seemed unfinished, and my mind was astir trying to unlock the secret. I wanted to find a way to hold on to the same image, yet eliminate its boundaries and let it blossom. Then in 1999, it came to me – literally in a dream - a way to give it more depth and dimension…I dreamed the idea for Photomosaics. Remembering the steps to create my first Photomosaic, I printed dozens of the same photo in different directions and connected them with post-its. From that day, the elusive spark of my creative purpose was ignited!

Q: What differentiates your art from other art?

Mosaics of Life

If you are looking for art that showcases commonly seen images in a truly unique way, I offer a different perspective. Peruse through my gallery; You will discover photographic mosaics reflecting everyday objects – slices of life – creatively formatted. “What is it?” you may ask. I leave that for you to discover.

Pushing the Envelope

Now entering my twentieth year of Photomosaic creations, I find myself drawn toward more diverse techniques and materials to push the envelope and express my style. Many of my works have evolved toward multi-dimensional creations, which I refer to as ‘Sculptural Photography’. I often visit metal, plastic and stone factories, where I love to find industrial materials to increase the unusual nature of my work.

My theme always remains the same; a design created from repetition of one photo, but as the years pass I offer more layers of diversity to offer something truly different.

Promoting Serenity

Life can be hectic and I offer you tranquility with my Photomosaics. There is a serenity that comes with repetition. Even in the most frenetic, discordant images, there is underlying symmetry, which I think fulfills our innate desire for balance.

Journey with Me

I try to provoke the viewers sense of curiosity…and take them on a journey. I want you to see something presented in a way you have never seen. I am always going for “WOW”.

The message of a piece is greatly important but to me what is most important is the viewers visceral feeling when standing in front of my piece.

Size Matters

I can customize any of my designs to your exact size specifications, on a variety of materials.
